What a great opportunity, although dam, its Wanstead.

Nothing wrong with Wanstead but a mid afternoon weekend visit for me means a 40/45 minute journey for something that really shouldn't take that long.

and i was right, 45 minutes later, I'm moaning to myself walking round Alexandra Lake about the journey and the incapability of drivers. When, historically, you drive as much as i did, drivers fall into a few categories and those categories vary depending on the location. They are all frustrating and ultimately could see me ranting for hours.

Digression aside, there were a couple of others sitting waiting patiently for the Grebe to venture out of the far bank as good views seemed to be almost guaranteed from what i had heard. Thanks to a pair of Little Grebe the bird was aggressively moved out and slowly started to work its way closer.

Views were amazing and i never really appreciated that eye before. The camera came out and i clicked away. Mostly awful, a few... meh, the odd one ok. This was my favourite.

#indoorstoomuchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710297550111211867noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7113421811004034147.post-1622020786610829352021-04-12T12:54:00.001+01:002021-04-12T12:54:08.186+01:00Another addition - White-throated Sparrow
I took the decision to head over to Barcombe Cross on Sunday morning. Arriving early at 6.30am i didn't have to wait long until it showed on the picnic table which has been kept topped up with seed on a daily basis by visitors.

The bird showed on and off whilst i was there and sung regularly. after good views and some dodgy photos i headed home.

#indoorstoomuchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710297550111211867noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7113421811004034147.post-34712181823364377782021-04-04T19:39:00.003+01:002021-04-04T19:44:12.436+01:002 tick day
A plan was hatched, regardless of your personal views, we were heading to the South West. Both vaccinated and both each with two negative tests under our belts the week before we were off. Leaving early, picking up Martin at 5am, we aimed to be in Exmouth for 8.30am, to tick, the first of our targets, the Northern Mockingbird. It has been a long stayer over lockdown.

This worked a treat. We pulled up and headed into the small alley at the rear of the gardens. Only us two, we had the alley entirely to ourselves. This was to change but only increasing by two once the bird showed itself.

We were fortunate, the Mockingbird landed on top of a telegraph pole in the alley and stayed for a while, allowing great views and the ability to dig the cameras out. Tick 1.

After our fill, we actually were ahead of of our plan. However one vital part was now missing. We were only heading onto target number two if news had been seen. It hadn't. Nothing for the American Herring Gull showing of late in Newlyn, Cornwall.

We didn't have to wait long before Bird Guides pinged the news and that was enough for us. Like Starskey and Hutch we were in the car and on the move.

Shortly after, well a couple of hours ish, we were driving through Penzance onto Newlyn. We headed to the beech and jetty where the Herring Gull liked to hang out. It had three favourite spots. These two and then the Fish Market Harbour roof. After searching for a while, it was seen distantly on the roof. Heading over, Tick 2.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVk20sR2UIIg7hPJaGpgOfPlEetbFuw9GSWzRQCY0xhnt9-Ouo-HuctzD9k3qa6X8US6CzdZHXmx7ZZaSOEJR7gQ0tnDvkNJT95BwPPd1Okpuk9wK-rKMk14duqyrcix6wSzHtK3Xg7lI/s2048/C13E2103.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; Its been good fun, two minute walk from either one of us and now set up as a Hot Spot on eBird. We've had some twitches and some fly overs. Northern Shoveller saw me running over one morning. Last week i managed a fly over Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. One of those one time moments probably not to be repeated with the bird flying over calling as it went.

It truly is the no.1 birding location in the area. 😏

This has been there for probably three days and we've not paid it any attention. However today it caught Pauls eye. Wow, stunning bird. Hybrid Baikal x Eurasian Teal.

Its even been twitched now, 4 people over there specifically for it this afternoon. Invaders to our local covid patch. (update, a reglular stream of people. Usual suspects however i did manage to year tick the Wigeon for the all important #69.

A new, i really dont want to see any humans route, sees me cutting through the trees to get to the new hill at the far end and then allows me to wander in relative peace. The lazey arsed dog walkers dont tend venture this far away from the center, a few do but in the main its dog free compared to the Hornchurch side.

This also means that you get less people all together - result.

I walked down to the Paddock, hoping for Yellowhammer but this didnt happend and as i tunred to head back, thick black smoke assended into the sky. Holly shit, my car was on fire. No i mean it. The only thing near the smoke signals bellowing into the sky was my motor. I panicked, then laughed, i wanted a new car anyway. I headed back, i started to run, then back to a casual walk, then a fast paced walk come run. No matter what way i moved that smoke was coming from my car.

Now i dont often think my car is in flames but on the way i had stopped just before the tip to take some photos of Fieldfare at the roadside and as i undid my window, i could smell a feint burning smell coming from what i thought was the engine. 2&2 makes 5 right...

My path veered left, i looked, yep, still my motor! Then if that wasnt enough fire engines headed along the road in the distance, sirens at full blast and made a line straight for it.

I gave up, thoughts tunred to that new F Pace i wanted, i smiled and wandered slowly back. It took until i was about 50m away from the car to establish my car was in a non burnt out condition and that the firebrigade had beter things to do and where now elsewhere.

Demorilised, i got in a went home.

Stonechat again on the new hill and Lapwing over for #70 today

#indoorstoomuchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710297550111211867noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7113421811004034147.post-76886299293525957742021-02-03T13:09:00.003+00:002021-02-03T13:10:58.390+00:00Back to the garden
We are now as a family in full isolation for a total period of 15 days and not allowed out anywhere. Not becuase we have Covid or are suspected of having but because my wife has to have an operation. She had Covid test earlier this week and we were told to all stay in until the operation date and then again for 10 days after. All makes sense and will happily comply.

My gardens pretty cool as Sub urbans gardens go. Birds that have actually used the garden have included Waxwing and Mallard. Goldcrest is almost daily as is Coal Tit.

Overs have included some suprises, Whimbrel, last year, was a biggie. Shelduck another a few years back.

#indoorstoomuchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710297550111211867noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7113421811004034147.post-28074736910282633742021-01-31T15:59:00.004+00:002021-02-01T13:05:23.455+00:00Stone Chat - Ingrebourne
Yet again i hit the alarm and turned it off, another weekend gone by where the thought of going really early to the Valley for Tawny Owl was not that appealing. As the mornings start getting lighter earlier this is going to be troublesome unless i wait until later in the year or go late one evenning.

I started up by the reservoir, checking this in almost darkness, it was pretty empty. A couple of Great Crested Grebes, Great Cormorant, Coot & Mute Swan.

I cut through the road side trees, onto the new hill and made my way round the bend to the path near Bonnets Wood. There was more Skylark activity today, more than i have seen this year so far. Meadow Pipit flitted off as i walked. As i approached Berwick Glades a female Stonechat appeared on the fence line shorltly followed by a male, both birds already heading in the same direction as i. I followed them down to the corner, still pretty dark, so took a quick record shot and moved on to the farm fields.

Not having long here, i recorded a flock of 40+ Reed Buntings. Gulls were moving over and still needing Great Black Backed Gull i spent time looking through these but to no avail. Once to the turn style at Dead Mans Wood i retraced my steps and headed back to the car.

Sonechat takes me to 68 for the year which is my best start to a year. It should be 69 but we wont talk about the red headed goosanders.

Out for only an hour but enjoyable and home for the Big Garden Bird Watch.

#indoorstoomuchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710297550111211867noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7113421811004034147.post-68621452710103234202021-01-29T18:03:00.010+00:002021-01-30T07:48:13.681+00:00Russian White-fronted Geese - Dagenham Chase
So i took a different local direction today and headed over to Dagenham Chase. For somehwhere so close its weird that i do not visit more often. I think its the fact that i dont like heading in a London direction. I'm OK as far as Romford but then, i'd rather skip the rest and end up in the city and beyond. That middle bit holds no interest for me. This is probably the same reason as why i have no LNHS list of any kind.

Im sure its lovely but i'm and Essex boy not an East London one. Anyway regardless, i got to the Chase and headed to Tom Thumb. Nothing.....2 Canada Geese and a couple of Coot.

Ok......onto the the playing fields then, just as i turned, sploosh, 10 odd Greylag and 2 Russian White-fronted Geese.

#indoorstoomuchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710297550111211867noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7113421811004034147.post-44900906960834896432021-01-27T08:15:00.003+00:002021-01-27T08:17:37.549+00:00Is that, is that......of course not
10 years, 10 whole years of trampsing aroung Ingreboure Valley, actually make that 8. I spent probably the first 2 years in the Rainham reserve in fear that if i was seen outside i would be severley mocked by all who knew about my new found hobby.

Anyway, 8 years is still along time to be walking around Ingrebourne Valley and still not ticked a Mistle Thrush.

They are there, i've been told the best locations by Dave Mcg historically, now others are telling me in a hope that i can now even TWITCH one. The thought of rushing the small distance to the Valley, dashing across the park to twitch a mistle thrush is laughable.

I took my morning walk over there a couple of weeks ago. I visited the area where two of the guys had seen Mistle Thurush recently. Its one of the areas DMcg had also told me about.

Nada

I wouldnt mind, i see, i hear them on a regular basis. They are a regular to my garden, more so than Song Thrush. The breed over the local park, of which i back onto. I was at the Platford Swan Pond yesterday, guess what....Mistle Thrush!

I'm kind of hoping that the universe will, now this is written down, allow one to pop into my view at the weekend, for ages, in beautiful photograhic light. A bird that allows a level of closeness to obtain some shots that i can keep........on the other hand it could just stick two fingers up at me and the search will continue.
#indoorstoomuchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710297550111211867noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7113421811004034147.post-90505852233127215392021-01-24T10:20:00.005+00:002021-01-24T10:26:12.630+00:00Black Headed Gull - Platford Green

Due to the feeding that goes on at Platford the numbers of Gulls is growing. This has meant i am now visitng the local park and Swan Pond. The Swan Pond is not in the park and i'll come onto that another time. As for Haynes Park, its extacly what you would expect from a local park.

Its not large. It has a small postage stamp size area of mixed woodland, a playing area for children, edged by back gardens and The Ravensbourne running along its main length as it heads towards Harrow Lodge Park. The river isnt exactly large at this point and in some cases under normal flow you can stand in it with normal shoes and not get wet feet - basically its a moving puddle. The good news is it has very little litter. Its enclosed for most of its journey through the park by the trees as such most areas cannot be accessed.

This park is never going to be a major attraction for birds and my garden is so close that i probably will be duplicating lists. Hey ho, its something to do in these odd times.

Highlights if you can call them that include a pair of Moorhen that breed last year and are still holding firm in the green bridge area. Not on the garden list but they are on my noc mig list. It also does well for Lesser Whitethroat in the summer however not so well for Common Whitethroat. I have no record so far.

The fields are boggy like most places presently and this is attracting more gulls than normal. 115 Black Head Gull yesterday, 30 Common, 1 Lesser. A yellow ringed North Thames Gull Group Black Headed but i couldnt get the ring number apart from the inital no.2.

Grey Wagtail is pretty frequent at the furthest (river) corner, the river is lined with concrete which has created good conditions for them at this stretch.

Numbers of corvids are large, highest count of Carrion Crow so far has been over 100 birds all on the fields, add to this the Jackdaw, Jays and Magpies and its over 115. Why? the dog walkers love to feed them. The Crows will follow you around at you feet in large numbers.

Peregrine is also a very good possibility, seen regularly in the area and with pigeon roosting flats at both ends of the park, its just timing.

Probably the largest species represented over the park though is Dog 😕. The standard mornings are a joke and unless you want to get jumped up at and covered in mud, avoid it. Beat the dog walkers and i'm sure something could turn up here.

#indoorstoomuchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710297550111211867noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7113421811004034147.post-13610958022207658452021-01-20T12:19:00.001+00:002021-01-21T10:32:22.305+00:00To Blog or Not to Blog
The fad a while back amongst birders of all levels was to blog, it was a way to share your trips, whats been seen and the enjoyment of the event. Slowly but surely social media took a bigger hold and now Facebook groups, Whats app groups, Insta and Twitter have taken over.

Blogs from people had started up everywhere, myself included. I started this shortly after i started birding, 10 years ago, as of October 2020.

Like others, as you can see, from the "further reading" tab to the right, most stopped about the same time. Some hard core bloggers have continued and some do make good reading. Do i read them as religously as i used to, no. I look in maybe once every 4-5 weeks for a cursery catch up.

However, what caught my eye the other day, was when i read my own posts. Most of it is utter dribble and this is a running theme through most blogs out there i've read. I'm sure this possiby could offend some but please dont let it. Why? becuase its my/your dibble. It meant something to me/you. It brought back memories of the little things that i had totally forgotten. The bits that actually made the day if it was a twitch or the smaller events, that made a trip round a patch more memorable. These generally were the non birding moments.

Does it matter that i only look at bloggs infrequently? proabably not. Should i interact with these blogs more and make more comment? proabably yes.

Does it matter i cannot spell or my grammer is terrible? Yes of course but will this change, no it wont.

So, a return to blogging? Why not, if anything i can read it again it 10 years and realise i was still writting dribble. Where to begin........oh hang on.....

#indoorstoomuchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11710297550111211867noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7113421811004034147.post-86100165159236978342020-07-06T17:27:00.001+01:002020-07-06T17:27:44.983+01:00Gull-billed TernMonkey and I headed separately down to Dunge last weekend, it was a superb little trip allowing us to both tick for our BOU lists Gull-billed Tern. For those that need the translation of the title its "Spain Malaga" 🤦♂️ and this is where i found myself for the first few days in May and all because of beer. Yep beer, it has a lot to answer for on birders drinks however on this occasion it turned out fine.

No, better than fine, absolutely amazing as my first official birding trip took shape. The plan........

Visit Spain for 3 full days birding covering various habitats. Flying from Southend using East Jet - £45pp for return flights, staying in the Hotel Campanile within the commercial area of Malaga £172pp, a room each. Now with prices this cheap it meant that two of the three didn't have to listen to the third snoring all night. You nose who you are.......🤣. The hotel was chosen as it meant an easy walk to our first destination, it also allowed our guide to pick us up with ease for day 2 & 3.

Day 1: Parque De Guadlehorce

Day 2: Osuna

Day 3: El Torcal de Antequera & Hoz De Marin

As already mentioned days 2 & 3 were to be guided. We used Luis from www.birdaytrip.es. A lovely guy who went out of his way to find us birds. He knew his stuff, he knew the places to go. Highly recommended and i would use him again.

So, who was going i hear you ask........my good friends Dave "the Peregrine" Morrison & Martin "the Monkey" Blow.

Day 1: Parque De Guadlehorce

A early start saw us walking to the river mouth. It was dark and we were hoping to see maybe Purple Heron out of roost; However the walk took a little longer than anticipated and we also slowed up as we approached the reserve from the main road. Nightingales played out their tunes from nearly every bush. Bird song was being thrown at us from every direction.

We entered the track leading to the reserve and as we distanced ourselves from the main ring road through Malaga the cacophony of bird noise increased. zii zii zii as i heard my first ever Zitting Cisticola and from there on in these little birds were everywhere. The light started to increase and slowly but surely birds started to take flight. Serins on mass, these little birds seemed calling from every single tree.

Then.........Hellllooooo......a flock of 18/20 Greater Flamingo's came in and disappeared onto one of the pools we were yet to see. Do a little dance and so i did as this became the 1st, no 2nd, life tick of the day, forgot zii zii zii.

Finally we found the entrance to the reserve itself, back across the river. We stopped here for some time on the bridge, a few House Martin, a few Barn Swallow however the star of the show was untold numbers of Red Rumped Swallows. They were showing amazingly well for us as they flew close and some times within a matter of feet around our heads and our feet.

I was having a great time and yet there was more to come - A LOT MORE to come. We started our wander around Guadlehorce, the sun was rising well, the temperature at this time was great but it was to get a lot warmer.

"Hold on; what are they" - 6 Squacco Heron; they too lowered themselves onto a pool we hand not come to yet. The 1st lake we came to held White Headed Duck, a male as well. Black Winged Stilt was also here and in addition to these 4 birds, they were in large numbers all over the varying pools.

The afternoon was spent retracing our steps and covering the place yet again; we also spent a lot of time trying to photograph birds from the hide. Nothing is ever close enough when the camera is in hand all though i was pleased with some of the stuff i got.
There was a light drizzle of rain in the air all times.

I met up with Monkey just after 12 and we both headed to the viewing area to tick off the Shelduck that had been there all morning.

Straight back to the cafe for a brief lunch and we headed out properly for a few hours birding. It became a bit of a tick fest for us both with Monkey ticking 6 and myself 5.

I added Bullfinch, Shelduck, Lesser Redpoll, Peregrin, and the most fantastic pair of Collard Dove.

After the conversation down the pub Friday we both wanted to ensure it was a fair tick. We were in the car technically outside the recording area. We pulled over got out, walked across the road and stood in the required zone - high 5 (yes a proper one Jono) and a lot of childish giggling saw us back in the car with another under our belts.

The scores so far are all impressive;
Little Bunting kick starts the 2018 lifer list. Today saw me heading out in the gloom, rain, cold over to Walthamstow Wetlands. A place i have only been to once before to see a dying Gannet not to very far from where i stood today.

Its changed a lot, its accessible and has a nice cafe. I'm beginning to like visiting places where you get charged over the top prices for coffee. £2.80 for a Latte, smaller than Costa's small and more than the cost of a medium., mmmmm. It was OK but didn't warrant the price tag. And in my effort to ruin the planet like everyone else, i got it to take out. However this was on the way home so i've jumped ahead.

Luckily i got stuck in traffic on the A406 or my wait in the rain would have been longer, i don't enjoy travelling to London birds, it took me forever last year to get to Wanstead for a Slav Grebe and i didnt even get to see it. Today took just over and hour which considering it took me 20-25 minutes to get home is a pain.

At the site and numerous people were now all chatting, no body looking for the bird. Chat chat chat. One bloke even on the phone facing the wrong way and after 10 minutes of chat advised to the recipient of his call that nobody was looking for the bird, everyone was chatting.

In my company were two of the Wanstead boys, Jono and James. James had ticked it earlier so he quietly took his leave and headed for the drake Scaup on No. 5 Reservoir.

Me & Jono persevered. A fair few Reed Bunting and Dunnock. Kingfisher behind us. Fieldfare chacked off to our right. Other bits knocking about but no Little Bunting.

After about an hour another Reed Bunting flew into the main bush in front, both of us then witnessed another bird fly in lower down but it went further in. We couldn't see it too well so reverted to scopes. It still couldn't be see that well when it turned slightly and Jono called it.

💥💥 Tick Tick Boom 💥💥

It showed probably for about 5 minutes, not that i saw it for that long with all and sundry wanting to use our scopes. 2018 Tick for Life and London.

We headed off for the Scaup.

......for now.

With yet another little jaunt over to the Ingrebourne i have managed another couple of additions keeping me behind the others as expected, but at a healthy distance. Adding House Sparrow and Red-Legged Partridge this morning takes me to 68.

So as far as i can tell, Hawky is on 73, Mo 71, Shaunboy 71. Mr McG has so far kept his cards close to his chest but is probably already on 80 :) The new addition, Monkey, has smashed his way to 34 in about 10 minutes yesterday. He was going out jogging over there today and has probably added a few more.

Its hotting up 🔥🔥 and looking to be quite an expensive year at this rate.

So, another morning over the Valley, and out and about also were Paul & Shaun.

Some decent patch birds were found between us. I left along with Shaun, and shortly after Paul gets two Bewicks coming into land on the reservoir.

Luckily hadn't changed and was in the garden, so i jumped in the car and headed back. Sitting nicely on the reservoir two Bewicks for us all to view - Me, Paul, Shaun & Dave Mo.

So another patch tick for me and these two bids being the 2nd site record.

List now to 64.

Trip two: a few additions but a rather wet end to a pleasant couple of hours. List to 55 with 7 additions.

I spent most of the time viewing the reservoir, then ventured on to the farm trail to the woods and back followed by the Glades and finally onto the lower paddock.

My target bird was Lesser Redpoll - i struggle with these little things for some reason, not just over the Valley but anywhere. Unless i stumble across a flock feeding and see the movement, i just cant find them. Today was the same.

Rather wet

Coot, Mute Swan, Little Grebe, Gadwall, with the last two added to the list. A Red Crested Pochard type was also to be seen. I thought it was an adult female but it didn't look right. Hybrid? So i'm presently referring to the Duck bible by Sebastien Reeber.

The bird was among the Gadwall; however took flight on its own heading towards Berwick ponds.

I haven't been over the farm trail much over the last few years but the farmer has left a few patches of the summer crop to go to seed along the trail. He may have been doing this for the last few years obviously but i hadn't seen it before. The patches we're really busy with birds - it was great to watch both yesterday and today. Yellowhammers, Reed Buntings, Chaffinch - loads of them. Linnet was added here.

On to the Berwick Glades and the farmer had started work in the fields - 60c Snipe rose from the furthest field closest to the center, finally settling again. A couple of Pied Wgatail followed by a Common Gull and small groups Fieldfare over; the first two coming from the reservoir direction and the last from the trees around the marshes.

So, back to work tomorrow - how long before the next visit - next weekend? next month or maybe June?
